WordPress – Google Requires SSL
Technically, Google or any search engine doesn’t absolutely require you to have a secure website, but they will penalize you if you don’t. A website is ‘secured’ with an SSL Certificate which often can be ambiguous and confusing if you don’t deal with website development and configuration all the time.
With that let’s get the info straight from the horses mouth, the big dog, Google with Why HTTPS Matters?
And if you have a WordPress site make sure you don’t make this naming mistake on the Setting > General area. Make sure both the WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) are the same.
- If you DO NOT have an SSL Certificate then both fields would start with http.
- If you DO have an SSL Certificate then both fields would start with https.
